When Can I File My First Claim?

Learn how the 30-day waiting period affects your device protection coverage.

A 30-day waiting period applies when you first purchase your USAA Device Protection plan.

During this period, you can use your plan portal and review your coverage, but incidents that occur during the waiting period are not eligible for coverage.

Example

If you purchase your plan on September 1 and your phone is accidentally damaged on September 15, the incident occurred during your waiting period and would not be eligible for coverage.

Does the waiting period apply when my plan renews?

No. The 30-day waiting period applies to your initial plan term and does not restart when your coverage renews.

Is this the same as the 30-day claim filing deadline?

No. These are two separate requirements.

30-day waiting period: Applies when you first purchase your plan and determines when coverage becomes available.

30-day claim filing deadline: Once you are eligible for coverage, a claim must be reported within 30 days of the incident.

For example, if you've had your plan for six months and accidentally damage your phone, your waiting period has already been completed. However, you must still report the incident within 30 days.
